As a child, I absolutely loved to decorate my bedroom. I frequently rearranged my furniture, changed my bedding styles, and chose brand new themes that would make my little four-walled world more fun and inviting.
Luckily, my wonderful mother not only supported my continual need to completely re-decorate and re-style my room, but she also relished in the creativity of it all, right along with me. She sewed beautifully, so I was blessed with a mother who could literally help me create my vision. We would draw and write out our decorating ideas and details on paper, cut out photos from magazines and catalogs, and then we would frequent local fabric stores, searching for the perfect fabrics and adornments. From there, we would work fastidiously to bring our ideas to life.
The result of my Mother allowing and encouraging such decorating projects did several amazing things for me that I carry well into my adulthood. First, it created fantastic, magical rooms that my friends and I enjoyed throughout my childhood. Second, it strongly bonded my mother and I together, as we shared a common love for creativity, style, fashion and décor. Finally, it sparked a love of interior styling and gave me confidence in my ability to envision, create and ultimately decorate well.
Things have changed so much since my own childhood and now the number of themes, styles and products available for babies and children’s rooms are truly mind-boggling! I don’t believe in decorating a room so that it will "grow with" the child. Who wants to live amongst the same exact room decor year after year? Why not change room styles and themes as your child grows, while encouraging them to truly express themselves? Childhood is the best time for letting imaginations soar!
